about One Direction

One Direction is the biggest boyband in the world. They're made up of Harry Styles, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne and Niall Horan who all auditioned as solo acts on the 2010 UK series of The X Factor. Until March 2015, Zayn Malik was the fifth member of the band, before making the decision to leave.

Niall Horan was born in September 1993 in Mullingar, Ireland and auditioned for the X Factor with a cover of Ne-Yo's "So Sick". Harry Styles is the youngest member of the group, born in February 1994 in Cheshire village Holmes Chapel. He auditioned for the X Factor with "Isn't She Lovely", originally by Stevie Wonder.

Liam Payne was born in August 1993 in Wolverhampton, UK. He made a return to the X Factor after being dropped before the live shows in 2008. He auditioned again in 2010 with "Cry Me A River" by Michael Buble. The oldest member of the group is Louis Tomlinson who was born in December 1991. His audition song was "Hey There Delilah" originally by the Plain White T's. All five boys made it through to the bootcamp stage of the X Factor before being rejected. However, Nicole Scherzinger and Simon Cowell made the decision to bring them all back to form a boyband. They made it through to the live shows and performed tracks like "Viva La Vida", "Kids In America" and "Total Eclipse of the Heart" before finishing the show in third place behind Rebecca Ferguson and winner Matt Cardle.

Since then, they've become huge worldwide. They started their music career outside of the X Factor in the year 2011, releasing debut single "What Makes You Beautiful". The track was a huge success across the world. It hit the top spot in the UK Singles Chart, as well as cracking the top 10 in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand and the US. Their next single "Gotta Be You" was less successful, but they climbed back to their popular heights when they released their first album "Up All Night". It got to number one in six different countries and went platinum across the world. It featured songs written by successful producer RedOne, McFly's Tom Fletcher, and singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Their next single from the album was the catchy "One Thing" which did well internationally.

Their final single release was ballad style tune "More Than This" which didn't chart anywhere. However, this didn't deter them from performing their first ever headline tour. They travelled across the UK and Ireland, Australia and New Zealand, and North America. Later in 2012, they released new single "Live While We're Young". The track was another huge success, charting well all over the world. This was followed by the release of second album "Take Me Home". The collection contained songs written by various writers, including McFly, Ed Sheeran and One Direction themselves. The album got to number one in 19 different countries, and charted in the top three of a further ten. One of the two Ed Sheeran penned songs "Little Things" was the next single to be released, and became an instant hit, getting to the top spot of the UK Singles Chart. The third and final single from the "Take Me Home" album was the catchy "Kiss You" which was once again popular worldwide.

In 2013, One Direction embarked on their biggest tour so far. The "Take Me Home" tour visited over a hundred different arenas across the world. They once again toured the UK and Ireland, before visiting mainland Europe to perform in France, Germany, Spain, Italy and several other European countries. They then started their huge North American leg, singing in Mexico, Canada and performing loads of dates in the USA. Towards the end of the year, they'll complete the massive tour with several dates in Australia and New Zealand. At the start of 2013, before starting the massive tour, One Direction released a cover of Blondie's "One Way Or Another" as the official charity single for BBC's Children In Need. The song got to number one in the UK Singles Chart and raised a lot of money for the charity.

2013 also saw One Direction release their first ever movie. "This Is Us", directed by Morgan Spurlock, followed Liam, Zayn, Louis, Niall and Harry as they toured Europe. It featured 3D performances taken from one of their London shows, and allowed fans to see the real One Direction. To promote the new film, One Direction released new single "Best Song Ever". The song was written by Wayne Hector, John Ryan, Haille Walker, Julian Bunetta and Ed Drewett. It was a worldwide hit for 1D, and entered the top ten in 15 different countries. In 2013, One Direction released third album "Midnight Memories", packed with hit singles such as "Best Song Ever", "Story of My Life" and "You & I". The album went to number one in the UK and US as well as many other countries worldwide, and was one of the biggest releases of 2013, despite being released in November. In 2014, they embarked on their first ever stadium tour, playing 69 dates in Europe, North America, and for the first time, South America.

The "Where We Are" tour was a huge success, and was followed by another album release in November 2014. "Four" was the band's next album, was announced alongside a free downloadable track "Fireproof". "Four" was another massive hit for the band, and songs "Steal My Girl" and "Night Changes" were released from it as singles. Shortly after the release of "Four", One Direction went on their next tour, aptly titled "On The Road Again". This time, they played gigs in Australia, Asia, South Africa and the Middle East, as well as their usual visits to Europe and North America.
